Welcome to Day 3 of the Club 12 Mental Strength Challenge, a 5-part series designed to help you stop being ruled by fear, worry, distraction, and fragmented thinking — and start training your mind to become calm, clear, focused, and strong.

Here’s what we’ve covered so far:

  1. Get in the driver’s seat of your mind

  2. Guard the gates of your mind

Here’s what we’re looking at today…

Today is all about one foundational concept: honoring your word.

Let’s say you tell yourself you’re going to wake up at 5:00 AM…

Do you do it, or do you hit snooze?

Because if you actually get up, your word strengthens. Your sense of self-honor strengthens, and you develop your mental strength.

If you don’t honor your word, you stop honoring yourself.

Each time you neglect to do something that you say you’re going to do, your mental strength becomes a little bit weaker.

Your follow-through weakens, your self-trust weakens, and your mental strength becomes flimsy.

Failing to keep your personal promises depletes your personal power.

I decided a long time ago that no matter what happens, if I say the words “I promise,” I am going to keep that promise no matter what.

In the video for today’s challenge, I brought on my 10-year-old daughter, Nora.

I asked her if I had ever broken a promise to her.

Her answer? No.

I then asked her to share an example (mind you - this was completely impromptu).

She remembered how I promised her—when she was just five years old—that I’d get her a puppy by or before her 10th birthday.

Well, that 10th birthday came a lot faster than expected.

And she expected me to deliver on that promise.

The part she left out was, that I did not want to keep that promise.

I didn’t think she was ready for that kind of responsibility… And I didn’t want to be the fall-back guy that had to take care of this dog if she couldn’t handle it.

So, I did everything I could to convince her to change her mind about it…

I offered to get her a cat instead. Nope.

I offered to take her to the mall and buy her whatever she wanted. Nope.

I literally handed her my phone and said, “Order whatever you want on Amazon; just change your mind about the dog and take your promise back—please.” Nope.

She held me to my word.

And when I give my word, I keep my word.

Because I know that if I break it, the cracks will show up in all the other areas of my life as well.

If you want to develop your mental strength, treat the promises you make to yourself with the same level of reverence.

(And yes, Nora got her puppy that day. A beautiful Shepsky named Raya. And she’s doing a damn-good job taking care of her.)
